Locals Only Artists

Vanessa Kwan

Vancouver, BC

Vanessa Kwan is a Vancouver-based artist and curator with a focus on collaborative, site-specific and community-engaged practices. Among other things, her artworks have included a geyser (with Erica Stocking), a garden best viewed by moonlight, and a series of events for sad people. She works as a curator with grunt gallery and with Other Sights for Artists’ Projects, an organization committed to producing artworks in the public realm.

Current curatorial projects include Big Rock Candy Mountain (by Helen Reed and Hannah Jickling), a long-term collaboration with students from Queen Alexandra Elementary School, a publication for Jacqueline Hoàng Nguyễn’s The Making of an Archive and a series of site-specific installations in development for the 2019 Sydney Festival (with collaborator Lorna Brown). As an artist, she is also at work on SPEAKER A, a permanent sound installation (with Theatre Replacement) and Houseplanters, a series of public sculptures commissioned by the City of Vancouver.

Project:

Vanessa Kwan’s project for Locals Only will respond to the cultural history of the Riversdale neighbourhood, and the project as a whole, taking up the idea of intercultural and intergenerational exchange through the metaphor of broadcast – radio waves, static, translation and dropped signals, which abound in an effort to communicate.
