Locals Only Artists

Michael Peterson

Saskatoon, SK

Michael runs Void Gallery, an artist-run centre focused on supporting local artists and the local arts community. They host Saskatoon’s only publicly-accessible printmaking studio, hold free drop-in art nights, and provide workshops in printmaking and other art methods. Michael is currently the Artist in Residence at Aden Bowman Collegiate, developing and offering printmaking education there; he filled a similar role at Centennial Collegiate last year. Michael received his BFA in Printmaking from the University of Saskatchewan in 2009 and his MDes (Master of Design) from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver in 2015. His thesis explored local food systems and food security with an emphasis on ways that community connections can be built through food.

Project:

Stories From the Carts

For Locals Only, Michael Peterson has worked with students in Aden Bowman Collegiate’s Seed program to produce zines (mini magazines), that respond to other artists’ projects in Locals Only, as well as issues of food security in Riversdale and surrounding neighbourhoods more generally. Youth will attend other Locals Only projects and Michael will then lead them in responding through the creation of images or short text. These images and text will be collected into zines which will be printed using a risograph printer (a low-cost and accessible method for large run printing). The zines will be offered for free at the Locals Only Mobile Market alongside the food and other items available as a method of sharing some of the stories around food in Saskatoon’s core neighbourhoods.
