Gratitude and Legacies: Concluding Locals Only 2017-19

On Saturday, August 11th, the youth at Locals Only learned the process of making pemmican at the art carts from Donna Lerat. Pemmican is a portable, high-energy, highly nutritious, and filling foods that can last for long periods of time. It’s made up of a dried mixture of meat, berries, and a rendered fat.
The youth were able to try their hand at grinding up chokecherries with a large stone, and then creating a paste from the chokecherries and lard. Passersby got the chance to get some quick tips and share in the fun. Our sincerest thanks to Donna for teaching us!
